My First and Not Last Post

My family is going on an 11 month trip to Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Madagascar, South Africa, Australia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Nepal, Morocco, and Italy. I will be homeschooled for my 8th grade year. The country I'm looking most forward to visiting is Madagascar, a large island off the east coast of Africa. Some of the things that we're going to do in Madagascar you can only do in Madagascar and nowhere else.

In Madagascar we are working with a volunteer group called Madagascar Research and Conservation Institute . We are collecting data on the lemur population, which are prosimians, a subspecies of primates. Lemurs are a species that is unique to Madagascar. Madagascar's location allows it to be a home to about 150,000 species of animals that only live there. I think studying lemurs is going to be one of my favorite activities on my trip.

In Madagascar we are going to learn how to scuba dive. In Australia and Thailand we are going to scuba dive at shipwrecks and the Great Barrier Reef. In the United States it is expensive to learn how to scuba dive. In Madagascar it is cheaper and the water is much nicer. There are other types of fish that are more colorful than the ones that are in the United States and I'm excited to see those fish. We are also scuba diving with whale sharks which is going to be amazing. I'm looking forward to just swimming in the ocean with the fish.

In Madagascar we will be completely offline. The camp that we are going to uses solar electricity to run all of their utilities, but the power is limited so they ask people not to charge their devices like in computers and phones. We want our phones in case of an emergency so we will not be spending any time on our phones during the day to save up battery power. One thing that I like about not being on phones or devices is that you see nature, and the world. We will spend more time outside and not on our device.

In Madagascar I'm going to be doing a lot of exciting and fun activities I am very excited for. Everything that I am doing in Madagascar will be a lifelong memory that I will cherish for my entire life. Even when we're not in Madagascar we're going to try to keep our screens off as much as we can, because we want to be able to see the world and what is around us and not just our phones.

Stay tuned for more blogs about our trip!
